Guadeloupe Bonifieur was introduced in the French Caribbean around 1720 by Father De Chirac, Louis XIV’s doctor, who entrusted the then governor of Guadeloupe, Captain De Clieu with sprouting. Bonifieur coffee rapidly expanded in Guadeloupe to peak in 1773 (6.6 millions coffee plants) and then almost disappeared in 1966 after Hurricane Ines. Planted in Guadeloupe as an experiment, Guadeloupe Bonifieur rapidly met a great success. The famous Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a derived variety.  Only a few tons of Guadeloupe Bonifieur are produced each year which makes it a very rare and sought after speciality coffee.

Coffee connoisseurs go through great trouble finding this rare aroma, this black gold grown with passion on the French Island.

Guadeloupe Bonifieur is Typica Coffea Arabica. This specialty coffee was originated from the Java offered to Louis XIV and bred in the “Jardin des Plantes”. This gourmet Arabica is called Guadeloupe Bonifieur because it is grown in Guadeloupe and in the past, it was used to enhance lower quality blends hence the Bonifieur suffix which means “enhancing” in French.
